2015 Kick-off Meeting with Tom Peters, CEO

2015 Kick-off Meeting with Tom Peters, CEO

Tom Peters, CEO of Marin Community Foundation hosted the first event of 2015 in his beautiful Hamilton Landing office space at Hangar 5. We had a great turnout with several CEOs and Board Members joining us for an energetic and lively interview with Tom Peters moderated by Paul Herrerias. It was highly inspirational and a real heart-to-heart conversation about his CEO career, challenges, and rewards. Tom’s career really evolved from his early work heading the public Department of Health & Human Services in San Francisco to running one of the nation’s largest community foundations.

REMARKS ON VIETNAM ON MEMORIAL DAY 2014

NATIONAL CEMETERY

PRESIDIO OF SAN FRANCISCO

It is an honor to speak on behalf of my comrades, who fought in Vietnam long ago, and far away. There are a lot of memories from two combat tours. If what you are about to hear sounds in any way unique, it was not; I’m sure my experiences would be familiar to almost any soldier who fought as a combat Infantryman. When I first went to Vietnam in January of 1968, I was a 21-year old Infantry Lieutenant; a paratrooper and Ranger in the 82d Airborne Division. Our brigade of the 82d was deployed to Vietnam as reinforcements, during the TET Offensive that had begun that month.

After flying by way of Alaska and Okinawa, we finally landed at Phu Bai, just south of Hué. It was sheeting down rain. A Marine CH-46 helicopter landed beside our transport. It had just come in from Ke Sanh, the combat base which was under siege in the mountains to the west, near the Laotian border. As the tail ramp of the helicopter came down, a Marine ‘deuce and half’ truck backed up. Bodies in gray-green bags were offloaded into the truck bed.

Most of the paratroopers with me had served in Vietnam before. To them, this was an ordinary sight. It wasn’t ordinary to me. In those first weeks, it rained ceaselessly, and was surprisingly cold. But when the rain stopped and the sun came out, it was like operating in a sauna. Most of the fighting was small unit actions, and ambushes. Continue reading

 About Joao:

Joao Correia began his successful career racing as a kid in Portugal, and went on to ride professionally. In 1996 he left cycling for college, which led to a career in the fast paced New York City publishing world. Joao’s wanderlust spirit took him on assignments with Hearst on titles such as Esquire Magazine that included working in Prague, Milan, San Francisco and New York. But the passion for the bike was always well rooted with Joao and eventually he became the Associate Publisher of Bicycling Magazine.

With that he started to ride seriously again and eventually lost 60 pounds which led him back to the top echelon of professional cycling as a member of the Cervelo Test Team in a transformation that the New York Times called a remarkable athletic achievement. Joao has also worked for Social Media powerhouse LinkedIn in San Francisco. Joao holds a Political Science and International Business Degree from Fordham University.

Joao is now currently part of two successful businesses; InGamba (view website here.) and CORSO Sports Marketing (website.)

Mark your calendars for our annual holiday party which will be held at the home of Paul Herrerias in Novato on December 9th.

We look forward to seeing you on November 11th at Il Fornaio!
